Equestrian equipment: Should you choose genuine or synthetic leather?

The choice between traditional leather and synthetic material is a frequent debate within the stables. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the use you make of it. Let's take stock to help you choose.  

Genuine Leather: Nobility and Sustainability 

Leather remains the historical reference in the equestrian world. 

Advantages: It offers exceptional robustness and molds over time to the horse's morphology for optimal comfort. With proper maintenance, it can last a lifetime. 

Disadvantages: It requires rigorous and regular maintenance. It is also a higher initial investment.  

Synthetic: Technology at the service of everyday life 

More and more efficient, synthetic material (biothane, technical fabrics) seduces with its practicality. 

Advantages: The maintenance is ultra-simple: a simple sponge or a passage under water is enough. It is often lighter, more affordable and available in many colors. 

Disadvantages: It does not always offer the same fineness of contact or the same 'patine' as natural leather. It is sometimes less adjustable in the long term.  

The verdict: How to choose? 

For competitions and precision needs (dressage or jumping sattle), leather is often preferred for its mechanical qualities. For daily training, hiking or wet conditions, synthetic is a valuable, easy-going and extremely durable ally.
